One of the things I like most about Birmingham is its canals. 257 kilometres of canals connect the city with the surounding towns, such as Wolverhampton, Dudley, Coventry orWorcester. Besides, they connect Birmingham with the rest of the English canal system.
As I explained in a previous post, Birmingham grew enormously thanks to the Industrial Revolution. The canals where created to improve the transport of products from town to town, and inside Birmingham too. The first canal was created in the 18th century by the engineer James Brindley, who surprisingly died just a few days after finishing the whole Birimgham canal system. Nowadays, only half of the Birmingham Canal Navigations is navigable. And, as you can imagine, now they are mainly used for touristic purposes and for private use.
When you see my pictures you will see the kind of boats that navigate the canals. They are called narrowboats. They are long and narrow, and they normally have fancy decorations, paintings, colours and shapes. This type of boats can be seen everywhere in the UK in any of the English canals. Some of them are used as restaurants (pintoresque restaurants, don't you think!) and others are used for touristic trips throughout the canals. Despite of their narrow shape and size, some people also live inside these singular boats, or, at least, they spend Sundays chilling out in their 'homes'. It is a pity I don't have any picture but, some people even have pots with flowers like little gardens on the top of the boats. Others, even have their own wooden logs for their fireplaces!
Even if I don't have any specific pictures of pots and wooden logs, I do have some other pictures of some of the canals and some of the narrowboats. So, enjoy them! And, if you decide to come to Birmingham and enjoy the canals, don't forget to stop at Brindley Place to have some really nice food (keep on reading!)
Enjoy!
